Talk:List of churches in Omaha

I'd really like to see all these entries have community-neighborhood, or at least just community, listed so that people can easily find churches in the area they are looking for. But to do that, we need to define the community areas better, and make sure all of Omaha is covered. Upon making the map it became clear that this is not the case. Also, I don't understand the boundaries of East Omaha as given on Wikipedia. ⇔ ChristTrekker 16:15, 13 February 2008 (CST)

Three quick thoughts. First, I agree with your overall premise of your comment that coming up with a community/neighborhood system should be a high priority - I'll try to make some progress on this in the next two weeks. Second, the Omaha World Herald's Classified ads or Real Estate section on Sundays has a fairly detailed map with labels for parts of town that might be a starting point. It is a more refined listing of areas than the broader map from Omaha by Design but is not quite as granular as your map. It is one of the best ones I've seen with text labels for parts of town that I think are reasonably descriptive and non-controversial. Finally, should we eventually move from category based search to an approach based on on distance from a given latitude and longitude? Everything I'm reading about search indicates one of the big trends is to local search and access from mobile devices (e.g., list all the pizza places within 3 miles of where I am right now or from 72nd and Dodge). Can we eventually get to this type of capability by adding the coordinates in the Infobox templates for location and then having some kind of front end 'location search' box? I presume this is a longer term solution and probably it makes the most sense to start with the category / parts of town approach. You agree? As far as East Omaha, I rarely hear that term, but don't have time to check Wikipedia right now. --Workman 17:01, 13 February 2008 (CST)
I don't get the WH but I've seen what you are talking about. If that is a familiar/widely-used system, it would be a great starting point. I like the two-tiered approach of community/neighborhood because sometimes you want to be general and sometimes you want to be more specific. However, I think the current definition of "West Omaha" is too broad. But I've said that at Talk:Community & Neighborhoods already.
On the neighborhood side, it would be nice if we could have granularity down to one (or two) sections (square miles). I don't know how these things are done in city planning groups, but I know people talk about areas of town based on annexation (Benson), school district (Millard, Westside), shopping centers (Village Pointe), or development (Lakewood Heights).
Being able to base searches completely on real-time vicinity (i.e. "what's within 1 mile of where I am standing") would be fantastic and we should definitely plan for it by providing geographic entries with lat/long coords, but I doubt "traditional" (i.e. "I'm standing in Miracle Hills, what's around here") searching is ever going away. ⇔ ChristTrekker 18:09, 14 February 2008 (CST)
