North Omaha is an area of the city that is defined by Dodge Street on the south, I-680 on the north, the Missouri River on the east and North 72nd Street on the west.

Neighborhoods in North Omaha include the following.

These areas are no longer called by these names, but they have been in the past:

  • Beechwood - A small community located around the current intersection of Pershing Drive and Read Street, Beechwood was located near the now-dry Florence Lake in East Omaha. The town had its own school district and commercial area, and today is site of a trailer court by the same name.
  • Gophertown - Between the towns of Saratoga and Florence, this was probably in the Miller Park neighborhood. This area was the location of several dugouts used by Irish immigrants before the 20th century.
  • Porter's Row - Location not noted. This was a community of African American railroad porters.
  • Scriptown - Bound by 16th street on the east, 24th on the west and Lake Street to the north, this area was a land grab for early Nebraska Territory legislators.[1]
  • Squatter's Row - Located east of North 16th Avenue and north of Cumming, this area was occupied by squatters from the beginning of the city through the 1940s.

  • East Omaha - Bound on the east by the Missouri River, on the west by Florence Boulevard, on the south by Carter Lake, Iowa and on the north by Read Street.
  • Gifford Park
  • Gold Coast - The neighborhood includes St. Cecilia Cathedral, has several important architectural gems, as well as several historical parks.
  • Kountze Place - Located between North 16th Avenue on the east to North 30th Street on the west; Locust Street on the south to Pratt Street on the north. Kountze Place was annexed into Omaha in 1887.[2] It was a suburban enclave of wealthy Omaha doctors, lawyers and businessmen through the 1960s.
  • Miller Park Bound by 30th Street on the west and Florence Boulevard on the east, Miller Park on the north and Sorenson Parkway on the south. Named after Omaha pioneer Dr. George Miller, this neighborhood was primarily developed from 1920 to 1950. It is the location of several churches, an elementary school and a park by the same name.
  • Minne Lusa - Bound by Miller Park on the south, Florence on the north, Florence Boulevard and Pershing Drive on the east, and 30th Street on the west. This neighborhood was named for the Minne Lusa Water Works, which was built just north in 1886. It was developed from 1915 to 1926.
  • Near North Side - Bound by downtown Omaha on the south and the Saratoga neighborhood on the north, 30th Street on the west and 16th Avenue on the east. A historical community built by historical German, Irish, Jewish, and African Americans, the community became a center of Black culture in the United States in the 1920s. The area was the site of several riots in the 1960s, and decayed for the next 30 years. The Logan Fontenelle Housing Projects were located there from the 1930s through the 1990s.
  • Prospect Hill

  • Walnut Hill

[edit] Former towns

These communities were once independent towns, and were incorporated within city boundaries at various points.

  • Benson - Located near 60th and Maple Streets. Originally incorporated as a city in the 1880s, it was annexed to Omaha in 1917. Benson has several historic locations, large parks, and important thoroughfares.
  • Dundee - Near 50th and Dodge Streets. Originally a separate city, Dundee was annexed by Omaha in 1915, but this annexation was fought until 1917.
  • Florence, the original Mormon settlement of Cutler's Park, which predates the founding of the City of Omaha; it was annexed in 1917.
  • Saratoga - Bounded by Locust Street on the south and Fort Street on the north, between the current Carter Lake on the east and North 36th Street on the west.[3]
